Glenwood Cemetery Waverly, NY My
first
visit
to a cemetery for my Genealogy project was to
Glenwood
Cemetery in Waverly, NY.
I knew a lot of my Lawrence ancestors are buried there, but I wasnt sure exactly where. On April 10, 2009 my Dad and I headed out, and he showed me where our ancestors are. Glenwood Cemetery is in the North-West corner of Waverly, alongside Waverly Glen park, on Moore street. My Lawrence Grandfather, Great Grandfather, and Great Great Grandfather (and other relatives) are all buried here. Most of the 20th century Lawrence extended family, (which is quite small!) All the headstones are located in the south-east corner of the Cemetary, right near the entrance: map from: http://maps.google.com Visit to Glenwood Cemetery, Scot Lawrence and Richard Lee Lawrence, April 10, 2009. My oldest Lawrence ancestors in this cemetery are my Great Great Grandfather (16) James Campbell LAWRENCE and his wife (17) Helen Elizabeth ROSE. Unfortunately their stone has tipped over, writing down, but my Dad is quite certain this is the correct stone. I plan to ask the Waverly Cemetery Commission if they can re-set the stone:
(click thumbnails to open full-size photos.) Next is one of James and Elizabeth's sons, my Great Grandfather (8) Charles Elmer LAWRENCE Sr. 15 Dec 1882 - 16 Mar 1969. Charles died only a month after I was born, I dont know if I ever met him.
The wife of (8) Charles Elmer LAWRENCE Sr. is (9) Mary Esther ACKLES. 13 May 1885 - 30 Sep 1960. My Dad's grandmother, my Great Grandmother. Mary and Charles were both known by their middle names, "Elmer and Esther Lawrence" They lived on Athens Street in Waverly. Mary Esther is the daughter of (18) William ACKLES and (19) Saphronia BIRDSELL of Spencer, NY.
(8) Charles Elmer LAWRENCE Sr. and (9) Mary Esther ACKLES have four sons: Their first son is Milton, born 26 April 1906, and died in 1909 at the young age of only three.
Their second son is "Elmer Jr." , Charles Elmer LAWRENCE Jr. 08 Mar 1908 - 17 Dec 1984 my Dad's "Uncle Elmer" My Grand Uncle, brother of my Grandfather Daniel LAWRENCE. Elmer Jr. was never married, and had no children. I remember Uncle Elmer when he lived with my Grandfather on Athens street (Waverly) in the 1970's and 80's.
My Grandfather, (4) Daniel Lawrence, is the third son of Elmer & Esther. b. 10 May 1910 d. 5 Aug 1987 He is not actually buried here, although he is listed here in the cemetery records: [13] He died in 1987 and was cremated, his ashes spread over his beloved golf course near Waverly. He never did get a headstone, something I would like to remedy someday. And Richard Leslie LAWRENCE, the fourth and last child of Elmer & Esther, is buried out in the Chicago area, where he lived with his wife Caroline HAAS. they have one daughter, Mary Lou LAWRENCE. (my Dad's only cousin on the Lawrence side) Other relatives of mine buried here right among my Lawrence's include members of the DEGROFF, MEADE, and PERRY families. DEGROFF is the maiden name of my Great Grandmother X3 (33) Margaret DEGROFF, wife of (32) James LAWRENCE. PERRY and MEADE are the married surnames one of my Great Great Grand Aunts, and one of my Great Grand Aunts: There is one MEADE stone here, among the Lawrence stones:
Matilda A. MEADE is Matilda A. LAWRENCE MEADE, My Great Great Grand Aunt. She is the daughter of (32) Jacob LAWRENCE and (33) Margaret DEGROFF. She is the sister of my Great Great Grandfather (16) James Campbell LAWRENCE. She married Charles A. MEADE. I know they had at least one son: Howard B. MEADE b. July 22, 1877 N. Waverly, N.Y. - d. Apr. 1, 1969 Waverly, N.Y. Son of Charles Meade and Matilda Lawrence. Wife; Burdina Decker Married 67 yrs. on Dec. 10, 1963 [101] Howard is also buried at Glenwood Cemetery in Waverly. If Howard in turn had children, I probably have some living Meade relatives today! (perhaps even in Waverly!) but if so, I am not yet personally aware of any. (according to source [101] there are many more Meade's buried in this cemetery! most would be unrelated to me..except for any descendats of Matilda and Charles, (if there are any) who would be cousins of mine.) And another related line, the PERRY family:
[509] Grace L. PERRY is Grace LAWRENCE PERRY. my Great Grand Aunt. She is the daughter of (16) James Campbell LAWRENCE and (17) Helen ROSE. she is the sister of my Great Grandfather (8) C. Elmer LAWRENCE Sr. She married Rollin C. PERRY. They had one son, Rollin Lawrence PERRY. I discovered there are some living descendants of Grace Lawrence and Rollin C. Perry! see source [114] for some details. I never heard of, or knew that these distant cousins of mine even existed before I started this genealogy project! (hello Perry's!) Below is a list of six other stones I photographed in the cemetery.. all are located in the same general area as the stones shown above. these are all likely relatives of mine, but I havent yet placed them on the Lawrence family tree: MEADE Charlotte K. 1895-1978 Burton L. 1897 - 1963 Robert T. MEADE New York Pvt 19 Co 152 Depot Brigade World War I March 20 1893 July 21 1958 MEADE E. Raymond 1905 - 1971 Beatrice 1907 - 1983 MEADE Dorothy J. 1903 - 1985 Howard B. 1877 - 1969 C. Burdenia 1880 - 1964 (get name) Son of L&E DEGROFF 1916 - 1917 Wm. M. PERRY 1858 - 1939 Harriet His Wife 1853 - 1916 The chart below shows how the DEGROFF, MEADE, PERRY and ROLLINS families fit in with my small group of LAWRENCE's from Waverly. (add full descendant chart of Jacob Lawrence and Elizabeth Degroff when done.) (move this section below to Lawrence family group sheets) My Great Great Grandparents (16) James Campbell LAWRENCE and his wife (17) Helen Elizabeth ROSE. James and Helen had four children: Grace Lawrence (married Rollin C. PERRY) Nellie Lawrence (married (unknown first name) THOMAS) Charles Elmer Lawrence (my (8) Great Grandfather) and the youngest, Leslie Lawrence. (Leslie is a boy) (see the family group sheets on the Lawrence page for more details on Grace and Nellie's families.) My Great Grand Uncle Leslie Lawrence is a bit of a mystery. I found him listed as a WW1 veteran on a plaque in a church in Waverly [029] other than that, little is known about him. My Dad recalls he was known as "Uncle Stout", and he lived in Aurora, Illinois. It is not known if he was ever married or had any children. Visits to Spencer, NY cemeteries are coming soon.. many Ackles and Hugg ancestors and relatives..stay tuned! |

OLD
RIVERSIDE
CEMETERY,
ATHENS, PA
The
patriarch of all the TALLADAY-TALADA's in Athens
is buried at Old
Riverside Cemetery, which is
located
on the corner of South Main street & Edward St in Athens. (park on Windsor Court, south edge of the cemetery) Its a small enough cemetery that you can easily scan all the headstones in one visit. Solomon is my (448) Great Grandfather x 6. Solomon's stone is in the northeast-ish corner of the cemetery.
Nearby is Solomon's son, John TALLADAY, who served in the Civil War. [115] He has a GAR (Grand Army of the Republic) flag next to his stone: GAR 1861 - 1865. (I think it is so great that there are still people who place and maintain American Flags next to the graves of ALL veterans, even veterans from the Revolutionary and Civil wars! THANK YOU to whoever is doing this!)
I found this interesting article about the 50th New York Volunteer Engineer Regiment. A third interesting stone in Old Riverside Cemetery is the stone belonging to Archie Temple. Archie was not a relative of the Talladay's, but he was a close personal friend of Solomon's. Archie and Solomon served together in the Revolutionary war, and later both settled in Athens: "There was a comrade of Solomon Tallada named Archie Temple that served in the revolution with him and came to Athens to reside after the war. The two comrades made a pledge with each other that when either died the survivor would go to the cemetery every Fourth of July and fire a volley over his grave, a vow that was sacredly kept." [107]
Archie passed away first, so it would have been Solomon who fired a volley over Archie's grave every Fourth of July, until Solomon's own death, seven years later. I haven't yet been able to determine where Chloe COUCH (Solomon's wife) is buried. she does not appear to be at the Old Riverside Cemetery with her husband. |

TIOGA POINT CEMETERY, ATHENS, PA In
contrast
to
the tiny Old Riverside Cemetery, Tioga Point
Cemetery is
HUGE!
So large that you would never have a chance of finding a specific headstone if you didnt know the general area where it was located...you would wander aimlessly for weeks.. Fortunately my mother is personally aware of many TALADA and KREMER ancestors and relatives in the cemetery, (her own parents, both sets of her Grandparents, and several of her aunts and uncles,) and I remember several myself from visiting the cemetery as a child. My cousin Jennifer knows of several more, and between us all I think we can locate just about all the recent (last 100 years or so, the 20th century) TALADA and KREMER ancestors and relatives. Im going to look for a nice map of the cemetery, and mark the locations of everyone, so the information is not lost to future generations..I will post that when I have it ready. Im going to post the photos of the stones in approximate chronological order, starting with the TALADA's, then the KREMER's.. TALADA and TALLADAY ancestors and relatives at Tioga Point Cemetery: The oldest known TALADA's in Tioga Point Cemetery are Casper TALADA I and his wife Caroline Lovira HENSON. Casper the 1st (there are other Casper Talada's descended from Casper the 1st) is not a direct ancestor of mine, but he is a direct ancestor of Talada cousins of ours who still live in Sayre to this day! (cousins I have not yet met! I only know of their existance from genealogy discussion forum posts on-line..I do plan to make contact with these cousins however!)
Casper TALADA the 1st is a son of my Great X4 grandparents (112) William TALADA and (113) Polly NORTHRUP, he is a brother of my Great X3 Grandfather (56) Augustus Solomon TALADA. Which makes Casper the 1st my Great Great Great Grand Uncle. Casper is probably of the first generation to be born with the spelling TALADA, as it is (currently) believed his father William was the person who first changed the spelling from TALLADAY to TALADA. As we saw above, Solomon TALLADAY is buried in the nearby Old Riverside Cemetery in Athens, then several generations pass by (I dont yet know where they are all buried) until we come to my (28) and (29) Great Great Grandparents:
Augustus Arlington TALADA and his wife Alace Victoria MILLER. Augustus and Alace are the oldest generation of "my" Talada's in this cemetery. (the oldest generartion of my direct ancestors) They are the parents of my Great Grandfather (14) Lewis TALADA. The photo above is from my second major visit to the cemetery to record headstones. the first was with my Mother on July 9, 2009, the second visit was a year later, on July 10, 2010, and this time I gathered together a whole bunch of Talada and Kremer realtives! My Mom, Aunt Donna, cousin Paul Kremer, Cousin Lynne, Cousin Robin, and husbands and children! (some of whom I had never met before..it was nice to meet you all!) Im sorry I didnt write down everyone's names! and I didnt think to take a group photo! that was foolish of me.. I plan to organize yet another visit! (there are still some stones left to find.) and this time I will be sure to take a group photo! Going down a generation, several children of Augustus and Alice are buried here, including my Great Grandfather, (14) Lewis TALADA, and his wife, my Great Grandmother (15) Minnie TALLADAY:
Lewis is the son of Augustus Arlington TALADA and Alice Victoria MILLER. and the father of Josephine TALADA KREMER, my Grandmother. Lewis and Minnie share their place in the cemetery with two of their eleven children, their daughter Blanche, who died in childbirth at age 17, and their son Gilbert, who only lived to be 4 months old. I find it interesting that this stone is marked TALLADAY rather than TALADA! Lewis would have been born a TALADA, and all his children were born TALADA's. Originally I thought Minnie was born a TALLADAY, but I now have evidence that proves she was actually born a TALADA. (see other headstones further down this page.) Minnie, (probably before she was married) and three of her sons, (Leo, Junior and Gerry) changed their surname back to the original TALLADAY (and a few other spelling variants, more detail on this is on the TALADA page.) But cleary Minnie was a proponant of the TALLADAY name, so much so, that she had TALLADAY placed on the stone! Even though her husband was always a TALADA, and presumably her married name was TALADA as well. Much more detail on the spelling mysteries are on the TALADA page. I have found the stones of two of Lewis' brothers, and both clearly are using the spelling TALADA. Also, their headstone of their father Augustus Arlington is also clearly marked TALADA. This confirms that Lewis, all his siblings, and their father Augustus Arlington TALADA were all using the spelling TALADA: Theodore "Ted" TALADA and his wife ROSENA S. BARROWLIFF TALADA: Ted is another son of Augustus Arlington TALADA and Alice Victoria MILLER. Ted is a brother of my Great Grandfather Lewis.
Lawrence TALADA and his wife Pearl M. LUCAS TALADA: Lawrence is another son of Augustus Arlington TALADA and Alice Victoria MILLER. Lawrence is a brother of my Great Grandfather Lewis.
Headstone of Maurice W. PARKS and his wife Marion I. TALADA PARKS: Marion is a TALADA, the daughter of Augustus Arlington TALADA and Alice Victoria MILLER. (she is the youngest of eleven children of Augustus and Alice.) Marion is a sister of my Great Grandfather Lewis.
Now we come to the famous Lodeska HEEMAN TALADA. (She is discussed a lot in on-line genealogy forums!) Lodeska is my (31) Great Great Grandmother. born in 1855, died in 1943. She is the mother of my Great Grandmother (15) Minnie TALADA/TALLADAY. Lodeska and her daughter Minnie are the main sources of the "Great TALADA-TALLADAY spelling mystery!" When I began this webpage, I had assumed Minnie was born a TALLADAY, which means her parents James and Lodeska should also be TALLADAY's..but we found Lodeska's gravestone! and it is clearly marked TALADA! Which throws a wrench into the works! (see my Talada page for all the details, I wont re-write it all here!) Family lore says Lodeska was a full-blooded Blackfoot Indian! Or, more likely, it was her mother Margaret who was the Native American..Lodeska's (and Minnie's) exact ancestry is still very uncertain..It will take a lot more research to untangle these two Women in our family tree, and figure out the ancestors of both. (Not only are Lodeska's ancestors unclear, but we still dont have Minnie's TALADA ancestry quite worked out either..it is believed that Minnie & Lewis were 2nd cousins, but exactly where their family tree's intersect is still quite uncertain.) Lodeska married James TALADA, and Lodeska's maiden name was HEEMAN. (It is often found on-line as HAMAN, but I have evidence to prove it is HEEMAN) [328] Two mysteries about Lodeska are now solved..At first we didnt know if her maiden name was HEEMAN or HAMAN, and we didnt know if her married name was TALLADAY or TALADA! But source [328] proves her maiden name was HEEMAN, and source [534] (her actual headstone) proves her married name was TALADA. Lodeska HEEMAN TALADA. Thanks to Aunt Shirley (the only surviving child of Lewis & Minnie in 2010) we do know all of Lodeska & James TALADA's children. (Minnie and her brothers and sisters!) source [273] Personal knowledge of Shirley TALADA MOORE, Sayre PA, Grand Daughter of James and Lodeska TALADA, daughter of Minnie & Lewis TALADA. The seven children of James and Lodeska TALADA: Frank TALADA b. 1887 d. 1968 Fred TALADA b. 1888 d. 1956 Mack TALADA b. 1890 d. 1928 Minnie May TALADA/TALLADAY b. 1893 d. 1961 Howard TALADA b. 2 April 1895 d. 20 Aug 1960 (Howard was a WWI veteran) Percy Earl TALADA b. 27 Oct 1896 d. 8 Oct 1957. (Percy was also a WWI veteran) Deborah Lodeska TALADA b. 9 Aug 1900 [330] One interesting thing to to note on Lodeska's headstone and the stones of all of Minnie's five brothers.. They all say TALADA! Minnie's mother was a TALADA, and all of Minnie's brothers were TALADAs..this essentially proves that Minnie herself was born a TALADA. She must have changed her own surname to TALLADAY, probably just before marrying Lewis..see the Talada page for the story! Headstone of Lodeska HEEMAN TALADA
James Talada was Lodeska's second husband! She was married once before James, and had at least one child with her first husband. Lodeska's first husband was Amos RANDALL, and they had a daughter, Nellie RANDALL. Nellie (daughter of Lodeska) then became Nellie KNOWLES when she married Sebastian KNOWLES. Nellie died in Waverly in 1956. see source [329] She is also buried in Tioga Point Cemetery, We will have to look for her. Since I am descended from Lodeska, but not from her first husband Sebastian, that would make Nellie my Great Grand HALF Aunt?? is that right? hmmm...(Nellie would be the "half sister" of Minnie) Six of the Seven children of Lodeska and James TALADA are also buried here at Tioga Point Cemetery! (and its possible *all* are..I don't yet know the married name (if she was married) of Deborah Lodeska TALADA. She might also be buried here, but we probably need her married name to find her.) Minnie's brothers and sisters are my Great Grand Aunts and Uncles. Headstone of Frank and Florence TALADA. Florence's maiden name is HAYWARD, they were married on June 17, 1911. [327] Frank is a son of James and Lodeska TALADA. Frank is a brother of my Great Grandmother Minnie.
Headstone of Fred TALADA. Fred is a son of James and Lodeska TALADA. Fred is a brother of my Great Grandmother Minnie.
Headstone of Mack TALADA Mack is a son of James and Lodeska TALADA. Mack is a brother of my Great Grandmother Minnie. (Mack, for reasons unknown, has the spelling TALLADA on his stone!)
Headstone of Minnie May TALADA/TALLADAY Minnie is the 4th child of James and Lodeska TALADA, and she is my (15) Great Grandmother.
and Blanch and Gilbert, two of their Eleven children. Headstone of Howard E. TALADA Howard is a son of James and Lodeska TALADA. Howard is a brother of my Great Grandmother Minnie. Howard is a WWI Veteran.
Headstone of Percy Earl TALADA Percy is a son of James and Lodeska TALADA. Percy is a brother of my Great Grandmother Minnie. Percy, like his brother Howard, is also a WWI Veteran.
And there is a 7th, and youngest child of James and Lodeska TALADA: Deborah Lodeska TALADA - born 9 Aug 1900 [330] Minnie's little sister. She might also be buried at Tioga Point Cemetery, but that is currently unknown. It is not yet known is she was ever married, or had children. All we currently know about her is her name and her birth date. And thats everything I have (so far) for my Great Grandparents Lewis and Minnie and their brothers & sisters. Now we drop down a generation to my Grandmother Josephine TALADA and her siblings: Headstone of Edwin KREMER and Josephine TALADA KREMER. Josephine and Edwin are my Mother's parents, my Maternal Grandparents. I never met my Grandmother (she died 2 years before I was born) But I remember my Grandfather fondly..He lived in Towanda with his second wife Helen during my lifetime..I saw him often. (more about my Grandparents will be in the Family Group sheets in the Kremer section..coming soon!)
Headstone of William E. SWARTWOOD and his wife Dorothy V. TALADA SWARTWOOD: Dorothy is a TALADA, a daughter of Lewis TALADA and Minnie TALLADAY. Dorothy is my mother's aunt, a sister of my grandmother Josephine. (Its interesting to note that William's year of death was never carved into the stone. I wonder why? that happens occasionally.) William died in on January 13, 1985, in nearby Ulster, PA [332]
Headstone of Luella C. TALADA CROSSETT, and her husband James A. CROSSETT. Luella is a TALADA, a daughter of Lewis TALADA and Minnie TALLADAY. Luella is my mother's aunt, a sister of my grandmother Josephine.
grave! that doesnt seem to make sense. James died in 1963..Luella would have been in her 50's during the Vietnam war, it seems unlikely she would have had anything to do with the war..Perhaps it is simply a misplaced flag? But if anyone knows anything about "Aunt Luella" being involved in the Armed Services, I would like to hear about it! Or perhaps its due to their son Rick? Rick (see below) was a Vietnam war vet. Do parents of war veterans recieve flags on their grave? I don't know..if anyone has any details on this, please let me know. (email link is at the bottom of the page) Headstone of Richard L. "Rick" Crossett. Rick is a son of James A. Crossett and Luella C. TALADA CROSSETT. [3] Luella is my Mother's aunt, sister of my grandmother Josephine, which makes Luella and James my Grand Aunt and Uncle, which makes Rick my 1st cousin once removed. Rick was a Vietnam Veteran.
Headstone of Leo W. TALADAY Leo is a son of Lewis TALADA and Minnie TALLADAY. Leo is my mother's uncle, a brother of my grandmother Josephine.
Leo is the oldest son, of three sons, of Lewis & Minnie that changed the spelling of his last name! All the children of Lewis & Minnie started out as TALADA's. (We have Jerry's birth certificate that proves this) But the three youngest brothers changed the spelling of their name, sometime in their early adult years: Leo TALADA (changed his name to) Leo TALADAY Lewis "Junior" TALADA (changed his name to) Lewis "Junior" TALADAY Gerald "Jerry" TALADA (changed his name to) Gerald "Jerry" TALLADAY For reasons unknown, Leo and Junior chose one "L", and Jerry chose two "L's" TALLADAY is the spelling their mother, Minne, adopted, probably before any of the kids were born.. Minnie was also born a TALADA. All the daughters of Lewis & Minnie remained TALADA, and it is believed the oldest son, Glenn, also remained a TALADA his whole life, and is the only son of Lewis & Minnie to pass on the TALADA spelling to his children. See the Talada page for more detail. Headstone of Julia Jane (unknown maiden name) TALADAY Julia (she always went by her middle name, Jane) is the wife of Leo W. TALADAY.
Headstone of Gerald "Jerry" TALLADAY and his wife Shirley NICHOLS TALLADAY: My Great Aunt & Uncle have a very unique headstone..its shaped like a giant fish! Jerry is the youngest child (of eleven) of Lewis TALADA and Minnie TALLADAY. Jerry is my mother's uncle, a brother of my grandmother Josephine. Jerry was a veteran, and served in Korea. He has a "Korea 1950-1955" flag placed next to his grave.
As I discussed above, Jerry decided to change his own surname from TALADA back to the original TALLADAY. I would be interested to learn the specific reasons he chose to do this, if anyone knows! (All I know is that he felt TALLADAY should be the proper spelling..I dont know anything beyond that.) Today his children and grandchildren are TALLADAY's, while all the other children and grandchildren of his brothers and sisters remain TALADA's. And thats everything I have so far for the TALADA's.. There is more to do! There are many more TALADA's to find in Tioga Point Cemetery, and elsewhere. In addition to my TALADA ancestors and relatives, several of my KREMER ancestors and relatives are also buried here at Tioga Point Cemetery..My Talada and Kremer lines come from my Mother's two parents..My Mother's father was Edwin KREMER, and my Mother's Mother was Josephine TALADA. Four Generations of KREMER's: First are my Great Grandparents, My Great Grandfather (12) Augustus P. KREMER, and his wife, my Great Grandmother (13) Carrie BRADLEY KREMER:
Also buried here is one of their four children, their daughter Nora. (Nora always went by her nickname "Nona") One of the sons of Augustus and Carrie is Edwin KREMER, my Grandfather. Edwin A. KREMER and Josephine M. TALADA KREMER are my Mother's parents.
One of the three children of Edwin and Josephine KREMER is Ronnie KREMER, my Uncle. "Aunt Judy" is Ronnie's second wife.
(The mother of all of Ronnie's six children is his first wife, Virginia JOLLY.) And representing the fouth generation of Kremer's here at Tioga Point Cemetery, is one of Ronnie's children, my cousin Bill Kremer, who died at the young age of only 7.
Bill is buried right next to his Grandparents, Edwin and Josephine Kremer. Bill's full name is Keith William Kremer. MYSTERY TALADA's! While exploring Tioga Point Cemetery, I have come across several Talada headstones that no one (in my immediate family) knows..Odds are very good that these are all relatives! Most likely cousins, great aunts and uncles, etc. of "my" extended Talada-Talladay family, but these are all, so far, "mystery relatives".. We dont yet know who these Talada's are, or how they fit into the larger Talada family tree of Sayre and Athens. Its possible some of them could be children of Lewis's brothers, or Minnie's brothers? many of the dates "fit" that possibility very well.. If anyone knows who these Talada's are, please let me know! Ollie F. TALADA 1897 - 1964 Marie E. (his wife) 1900 - 1987 Hillmont A. TALADA 1906 - 1962 Charles G. TALADA 1912 - 1966 Ellen M. TALADA 1917 - 1980 Lynn A. TALADA 1926 - 1994 Harry A. TALADA 1927 - 1996 Shirley J. (his wife) 1929 - the back of the stone has a beautiful etching of a Lehigh Valley Railroad locomotive! (I am very interested in LV history..both of my Grandfathers worked for the LV) Based on Harry's age, born in 1927, its possible he could be the son of one of Lewis' brothers. Anyone know who Harry and Shirley are? They probably have living descendants today. It's interesting that it only takes about 2 generations to "lose" relatives..My mother knows well all the names of the children of her aunts and uncles..all the children and grandchildren of Lewis & Minnie, but if you go up just one more level, to all of Lewis' siblings..we dont know anything of their children and grandchildren...Most people are the same way..you know the names of your parent's brothers and sisters and their children, (the children of your aunts and uncles, your first cousins.) but do you know the names of all your grandparents siblings and their children? probably not..they become "lost" to your family history, after only two generations removed.

UNION
HILL
CEMETERY,
MEHOOPANY, PA
Mehoopany
Pennsylvania was the home of
some of our TALADA ancestors.
the TALLIDAY's and the TALADA's have lived all over north-east Pennsylvania during the past 200 years, Athens, Towanda, Mehoopany, and other areas inbetween. I discovered that one of our TALADA ancestors, Augustus Solomon TALADA and his wife Clarinda MOREY were buried at Union Hill Cemetery, Mehoopany PA. Cousin Jennifer now lives down that way, and volunterred to visit the cemetery to record the Taladas she could find there! Thanks Jen! (56) Augustus Solomon TALADA is my Great X3 Grandfather, the father of (28) Augustus Arlington TALADA, and the Grandfather of (14) Lewis TALADA. Augustus Solomon is a key figure in "The Great TALLADAY-TALADA spelling mystery" (see my Talada page) because his gravestone confirms he did in fact use the spelling TALADA. As did several of his siblings, as did his son Augustus Arlington, as did his Grandsons. This helps confirm that is was most likely Augustus Solomon's father, William TALADA, who was most likely the person who first changed the spelling from TALLADAY to TALADA. This would make William the origin of the TALADA spelling. See the Talada page for much more detail on the spelling variations. Cousin Jennifer, a fellow Talada descendant and researcher, found the headstones of Four of our TALADA ancestors and relatives in this cemetery: (56) Augustus Solomon TALADA 1832 - 1898 (57) His wife Clarinda MOREY TALADA 1830 - 1914 and one of their sons, and his wife: Elmer O. TALADA 1862-1924 Elmer is a son of Augustus Solomon and Clarinda. Elmer is a brother of (28) Augustus Arlington Talada, which makes Elmer my Great Great Grand Uncle. Lina A. COLEMAN TALADA 1856-1899 Wife of Elmer O. TALADA I have a record that Elmer & Lina had one child, Margaret Mae TALADA. Born 18 Jun 1888. [270] (56) Augustus Solomon TALADA 1832 - 1898 My Great X3 Grandfather:
The not quite legible (and perhaps partially missing) text on the stone reads: "Co. C, 1st Reg. PA Arty. Civil War" [269] Augustus Solomon TALADA was a Civil War veteran. I found him listed with his company here: [292] and a description of the battles the company served in: [293] (if the full-size photo doesnt open up full size on your screen, notice the "expand" icon in the upper-left corner of the photo..click on that.)
