The shortline railroads of Owego, New York

Page 5.

The Luzerne & Susquehanna.

Originally when I started this webpage, I wasnt planning to have anything about the
Luzerne & Susquehanna here, because this page was about "The Shortline Railroads of Owego"..but the L&S is clearly a part of the entire O&H/L&S/Lehigh Railway story, and L&S motive power is clearly intertwined with Owego operations, so I thought a L&S roster would be appropriate to this page, just for the sake of roster completeness..

Im not going to bother with the Meridian Southern Railway yet! ;)
only because as far as I know, there have been no roster/locomotive connections between
the MDS and the OHRY or LS.

The Luzerne & Susquehanna is a shortline in the Wilkes-Barre, PA area.
It started operations in 1994, two years after the Owego & Harford, as the second shortline
in the O&H family.

(see page 2 for a complete history and timeline)

Luzerne & Susquehanna 30 is the identical twin sister of Tioga Scenic 40.
Both SW1's originally were built for the Boston & Maine, then to Springfield Terminal,
then to Provencial Shortline, then to LS/TC
Notice (photo below) that number 30 is still showing her B&M 1127 markings!

LS 40

Is now TS/OHRY 40, see Tioga Scenic section on the previous page.

LS 50

Bld No: 10436
Order No: 4031-6

History:
 1950 - Built as PRR 9363
 1968 - to PC 9089
 1976 - to CR 9089
 200? - to LS 50

2017 - Number 50 is still operating with the L&S

LS 1751

Model: EMD GP9
Built: Oct 1959
Bld No: 24294
Order No: 5556-13

History:
 1959 - Built as PRR 7242
 1968 - to PC 7242
 1976 - to CR 7242
 1983 - to Pocono Northeast 1751 (PNER)
1984 -  repainted from PC black to PNER green/yellow (unit never wore CR blue)
1993 - PNER ceases operations, most operations taken over by the DL.
 1994? - to LS 1751
2008 - Number 1751 is still operating with the L&S, still wearing her
             PNER paint from 1984.
2010 - 1751 is repainted into the corporate black scheme, with PRR keystone logos! with LS in the logo instead of PRR.
The keystones celebrate her PRR heritage. 1751 is the only unit to receive such special embellishment.
2017 - 1751 is still operating with LS.

And that makes five known LS units:

LS 30 -     EMD SW1 (now number 600)
LS 40 -     EMD SW1
LS 50 -     EMD SW7
LS 1216 - GMD SW1200RS
LS 1751 - EMD GP9

**note! It should be noted that the Corporate owners of the OHRY, LRWY and LS use the reporting marks LS whenever they transfer units over Class-1 railroads to swap them between the different lines. which means that nearly every unit in the family has had LS reporting marks at some time! ;) and this confuses people, who then list them all as LS units on internet photo and roster sites. For example, each of the Lehigh Railway units has worn LS reporting marks while they traveled to the Lehigh Railway..however, those reporting marks were for travel purposes only! and they never actually operated on the LS railroad. This page will only list LS units that have physically operated on the LS system.

Today (2017) three are operating with the L&S (600, 50, 1751)
and two are with the O&H in Owego (40 and 1216)

(im still not absolutely sure if 40 was ever technically a LS unit, or if she has always been in Owego)

there is also currently a leased unit on the L&S, BDLX 1201, an EMD SW1200.
Some on-line rosters list this unit as actually belonging to the L&S,
but because it is still wearing BDLX reporting marks, and not LS marks,
I would consider it leased and not on the actual LS roster.

Oddly, there are actually two different units lettered BDLX 1201!
they are very obviously different units, but are both shown wearing BDLX 1201
markings at the same time in 2007 and 2008...quite unusual.

This might actually imply that the BDLX 1201 on the L&S is really now owned by the L&S?
but they havent gotten around to replacing the reporting marks yet?
perhaps..
