Rochester & Southern Railroad

The Rochester & Southern Railroad came into existance on July 21, 1986, as the first of the "Genesee & Wyoming" shortlines.
(apart from the original G&W of course.)
It took over nearly all of what was originally the Buffalo, Rochester & Pittsburg Railroad's Rochester division,
from Rochester to Machias Junction.
All the R&S trackage on that first day came from Chessie System.

Today the Rochester & Southern Railroad extends from Greece, NY on the north end, south through Rochester to
the main R&S yard, Brooks Ave Yard, on the South West side of Rochester (right next to the airport) then south to
P&L Junction, where the line splits. One route south to Retsof, Mount Morris and Dansville, on the original G&W and DMM,
and then the R&S mainline to Silver Springs and the Norfolk Southern interchange.

The R&S today interchanges directly with three railroads:

CSX at Lincoln Park, Goodman St. yard, and Genesee Junction.
Livonia, Avon & Lakeville at Genesee Junction and Brooks ave yard.
Norfolk Southern at Silver Springs.

(and did once interchange with the G&W at P&L junction between 1986 and 2002, when the G&W was absorbed into the R&S.
and with Conrail at Rochester & Silver Springs before 1999.)

R&S history and timeline:

1869 - July 10, The Rochester & State Line Railroad is chartered. The new railroad is to run between
           Rochester and Salamanca, NY.

1874 - September 15 - The first train heads south out of Rochester on the R&SL, to the end of the line at Leroy.

1878 - The line is completed to Salamanca.

1881 - Rochester & State Line RR becomes Rochester & Pittsburg RR.

1887 - Rochester & Pittsburg absorbed into the Buffalo, Rochester & Pittsburg Railway.

1889 - BR&P completes it's Lincoln Park & Charlotte Railroad, extending the BR&P up to Charlotte to interchange with the
RW&O, and begins its Genesee Docks operations on the Genesee River, north of Rochester.

1891 - The Genesee & Wyoming Valley Railway is incorporated.

1899 - March 24,  the Genesee & Wyoming Valley Railway becomes the Genesee & Wyoming Railway.

1913 - BR&P builds the its downtown Rochester passenger station. Today the largest surviving station on the R&S.
still standing on West Main street, and now the home of Nick Tahou's resturant. Tracks still extend right to the station.

1913 - BR&P builds the Brooks ave yard. Today the main yard and engine terminal on the R&S.

1932 - The BR&P becomes part of the B&O system.

1972 - B&O becomes part of Chessie System.

1976 - EL and LV are absorbed into Conrail. LV and EL tracks abandoned at P&L junction.

1986 - Chessie sells the former BR&P/B&O from Rochester to Machias Junction to the new Rochester & Southern
shortline, which is a new "G&W Family" line. Ending 50 years of the B&O in Rochester.

1986 - July 21 - First day of operation for the Rochester & Southern. The R&S starts up with Six GP40 locomotives,
Numbers 101-106, all are ex Conrail, originally New York Central units.

The GP40's were not there on day1 however, they didnt arrive until a few weeks later. The R&S started up with
borrowed G&W MP15DC's and C424's.  LV211, the RS3 hammerhead, was also leased that first year, as well
as several P&LE SW1500's, several GP-9s from Golden Spike Rail Services, and a few lingering Chessie units.

1991 - August - last R&S train operates from Silver Springs to Machias Junction. The route is then abandoned,
severing the original BR&P Rochester division from the BR&P Buffalo division.
           Rails removed 1992 through 1993.
R&S now operates from Rochester to Silver Springs.

2002 - or 2003, exact date still uncertain..the G&W Railroad is absorbed in the Rochester & Southern system.
ending the 103 year history of the G&W Railroad as an independant entity.
The R&S now extends from Greece, NY at the north end, south through Rochester to Brooks ave yard,
to P&L junction where the line splits - one route to Retsof, Mount Morris and Dansville, (original G&W)
and the original "R&S Mainline" to the NS interchange at Silver Springs. (see system map on the R&S page)

2004 - 2006 -  exact date unknown. Rochester & Southern GP40 No. 106 was involved in a wreck, was rebuilt as a GP40-3
and was repainted and renumbured as Buffalo & Pittsburg 3103, however she has remained assigned
                       to the R&S!

2006 - January 31, 2006 - American Motive Power (AMP) recieves its first locomotive at the former Foster-Wheeler
plant in Dansville. Keeping the former DMM, and the southern end of the G&W/R&S alive.
AMP rebuilds locomotives. in 2006 and 2007, dozens of older
locomotives have been rebuilt there, here is a small sampling. (goto page 2 for photos)

2007 - Bringing us up to today..Today the R&S operates from Rochester to Silver Springs on the original R&S route,
plus the line from P&L junction south to Retso, Mount Morris and Dansville.
The R&S has owned 18 units during its 21 years history so far, and today operates with 12 units plus one slug.
