The shortline railroads of Owego, New York

Page 3.

The Tioga Central.

This roster will include both the Owego NY & Wellsboro PA locations, since both locations
shared the same locomotives.

(see page 2 for a more complete history and timeline)

The Tioga Central began on September 15, 1984, as an excursion railroad based out of the
Tioga Transportation Museum in Flemingville, NY.

It then also began freight operations, and moved to Owego, in 1987.

In 1992 it left Owego, was idle for two years, then in 1994 started up again in Wellsboro, PA
where it continues to operate passenger excursions today.

In 2007 the Tioga Central and the Wellsboro & Corning were both bought by The Miles Group. the new owners plan to continue Tioga Central excursion trains into the future. (before 2007 the TIOC and the W&C were separate railroads, under separate ownership.)

In 2012 the Five Tioga Central Alcos were all put up for sale.

August 2014, it is announced that all five TIOC Alcos were purchased by the Livonia Avon & Lakeville Railroad.

The LAL is only able to use S2 No. 14, and RS3m No. 506. The three RS1's are deemed inoperable, and will be salvaged for useable parts, then the carbodies scrapped.

August & September 2014, Alco RS1's 47, 62 and 240 are scrapped in Wellsboro. 14 and 506 are moved out of Wellsboro to LAL lines. The 506 moved to the WNYP in Olean NY, and the 14 moved to the Bath & Hammondsport in Cohocton NY.

In September 2014, the 30-year "Alco Era" of the Tioga Central, 1984 to 2014, has come to an end. There are no longer any Alcos in Wellsboro PA, and the Tioga Central itself no longer has any locomotives actually lettered for the Tioga Central. However, passenger excursions are continuing, and the Tioga Central excursion railroad itself is continuing under the Tioga Central Railroad name, however the passenger excursions will be pulled by Wellsboro & Corning SD40-2 freight locomotives.

Western New York & Pennsylvania Railroad in Olean NY. The WNYP plans to use her as the Olean switcher.
2016 - June - The WNYP has spent the last year refurbishing the 406, and in May of 2016 they made a public
announcement inviting the public and railfans to come to Olean to witness the grand unveiling of the
newly refurbished 406! I was working in Avon at the time, and was able to make the drive over to Olean! :)
My photos of the unveiling of the 406 on June 6, 2016, are here:
             http://www.railroad.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=162745
Thank you to Mr. Belke and the crew at the WNYP for sharing the event with us!

Incredibly, for 40 years, No. 506 remained the only 1976 Bicentennial locomotive still wearing its 1976
bicentennial paintscheme! Yes, the blue was given a fresh coat, but the striping and the
red paint was never replaced, and the overall scheme (apart from the lettering) remained
original to the D&H bicentennial scheme first applied in 1975! She wore this bicentennial paint until
being repainted into the LAL corporate black & yellow scheme at the WNYP shops in Olean, NY, in 2016.

No. 506 was one of eight D&H RS3's rebuilt into chop-nosed RS3m units by Morrison-Knudsen
in 1975-1976. Today 506 is the only survivor of the eight.
506 was also one of two D&H bicentennial units, the other being GE U23B 1776.
