Mysteries:
The status of these locomotives is unclear.
still surviving? scrapped? we dont know...
if you have any info on any of these, please let me know!

Three EL U33C were rebilt by GE as "cabless drones" and sent to China in the 1980's.
current survivor status of these units is unknown.
one of the three was EL 3313.
Photo of 3313 can be seen at: http://www.morscher.com/rr/sort_79-86date.htm
"AT GE PLANT, PAINTED FROM CONRAIL NUMBERS BACK IN EL NUMBERS FOR AN ERIE LACKAWANNA HISTORICAL SOCIETY MEETING. THIS UNIT THEN WAS SENT TO TIA BAO MINES IN CHINA. L. S. MELIN PHOTO"

The Saga of SDP45 6634

Wisconsin Central SDP45 6634 anyone know where she is? (EL 3656)
She was auctioned off by CP on July 11, 2002
museum at Spooner? http://www.railfan.net/lists/erielack-digest/200207/msg00269.html (it is now believed this never happened)
or Rail World Inc.? (AARX) (Ed Burkhardt) http://www.railfan.net/lists/erielack-digest/200207/msg00328.html

Update, December 2008.
Im still looking for Wisconsin Central 6634! ;)
several differing reports of her status/demise are floating about. there are SIX conflicting theorys!

1. museum at Spooner? http://www.railfan.net/lists/erielack-digest/200207/msg00269.html (it is now believed this never happened)
2. Rail World Inc.? (AARX) (Ed Burkhardt) http://www.railfan.net/lists/erielack-digest/200207/msg00328.html
3. Was perhaps Indiana Harbor Belt (IHB) 7601 for a time..then to GE.
4. Went to GE as a leaser, then to Larrys truck & electric, then scrapped by Larry.
5. sold and went to Mexico in 2003.
6. Will become IHB 7601 *after* rebuilding in Mexico!

I have seen no photo evidence of an actual IHB 7601.

She is likely scrapped by now..but with all the conflicting info, its hard to know for sure!
The most likely scenerio is that after being sold by CP, she was a GE leaser, sold to Larry, then scrapped by Larry.
but the "sold to Mexico" story adds in an interesting twist..she wouldnt be sold to Mexico (presumably by Larry), AND also scrapped by Larry!
you cant have both..
So im giving it 90% odds "scrapped at Larry's truck and electric"
and 10% odds she still exists in Mexico..can anyone really confirm either way?

Update, January 5, 2009.

ok! found something new..

Here is the likely fate for 6634, combining many of the above theorys into one story, which IMO is very likely the correct story:

csxt602 wrote on January-03-2008, 09:36 PM
Jon,
Here's what I found on former WC 6634:
Serial #: 36660
Order #: 7246-3
Build Date: 7/70
EL 3656
- CR 6687
-- VMVX 6687
--- MKCX 9511
---- HLCX 7002
----- WC 6634
------ IHB 7601
Apparently, WC sold it to Railworld, who in turn sold it to IHB, and it was sent to Mexico for rebuilding, where it was apparently scrapped. It never shows up on any IHB roster.
Info from trainweb.org/emdloco and the erielack email list @ railfan.net.

Update!
July 15, 2009.
Im recieved an email from a railroad employee (I wont post his name here)
who confirmed 6634 was definately scrapped in mexico..
he has paperwork to prove it..
so that's that then..farewell to EL 3656  :(

She was one of the stored SDP45's that sat in Sayre, PA in 1985/1986.
I last saw here there, stored as CR 6687.

Some of the U34CH were in Mexico in 1996, any recent news on them?

EL U34CH  3367  was operating in Mexico as recently as December 2003, as Alstom 4167.
in new Alstom paint!
she may still be operating! need to confirm.

update! June 2006, 3367 was spotted in Texas, heading for parts unknown.
see note 7 below.

And U34CH 3376 was spotted operating in Mexico in 2001.

Erie GP7 1207.
rebuilt to GP8 by Conrail @Silvis 1978
CMGN 9210 leaves town...
Paul Cameron reports that Central Michigan Railway has sold GP-8 #9210 and it is heading south today (3/7/2003).
9210 left Bay City for Durand this morning to be forwarded to the CN.
It has been reportedly sold to an elevator in southern Illinois.
This leaves its sibling 9209 out of service at North Bay City with major generator problems.
9209 is also looking for a buyer.  These two GP-8's on the CMGN lasted just over ten years, having entered service later in 1992.
from: http://www.michiganrailroads.com/MichRRs/News/2003Briefs/March2003.htm

Update -  January 2007 - Erie GP7 1207 is operating with "Consolidated Grain and Barge" in Naples, IL - still numbured 9210.
                                            9210 is - current CB&G 9210 - ex CMGM 9210 - ex CR 5447 - ex EL 1207 - nee Erie 1207

sister unit 9209 is also operating, Mt. Vernon , IN , -  at another Consolidated Grain and Barge facility.
                                            9209 is - current CB&G 9209 - ex CMGM 9209 - ex CR 5440 - ex CR 5756 - ex PC 5786 - nee NYC 5786

both began life as GP7's, and went through the Conrail GP8 rebuild program in the late 70's to become GP8's.

were shipped to the Ohio Central!

Alco S1 315 is on display in Galena, Kansas.
apparently it is privately owned, on private property, but is easily visable from a public road.
I found the following info on-line:

"An Alco Erie engine is "on display" in Galena. It is not really on display
since it is private but is completely visible. I spoke with a lady from the
Galena Historical Museum and she said the engine had been there as
long as she could remember but was owned by whoever owned the lot on which it sits."

EL SDP45 3665, was wrecked as the lead unit in a head-on collision in Bertram, California on Nov 10 2007.
The unit was officially numbured UP 2770 "on paper" at the time, but might have been still been physically wearing her old number, SP 8694.
Reports say the unit  will likely be scrapped, but scrapping has not been confirmed as of June 2008.

(nee EL 3665) (CR 6696) (rebuilt VMV) (last numbured as SP 8694) (was assigned UP 4730, then UP 2770, but probably never wore those numbers.)
update, September 2014, EL 3665 has been confirmed scrapped:
Notes: Built as EL SDP45; rebuilt by M-K as SP 8694 on 1/16/95. Wrecked 11/10/07 on RVVCGC-07 at Bertram, CA, retired by UP 11/26/07. Scrapped at Bertram, CA.

*note 11
Concerning EL 423 (BVRY 8201, 2nd) an EMD NW2.
The unit was operating with BVRY, but I recieved an email from Greg Kulp who said the unit has been stripped down,
and is being converted to a "Captive Unit"
Greg says: "A captive loco is similar to a slug.  It draws power from a 2 conductor 250 VDC catenary, is radio controlled,
and has a compressor for its air brakes.  Four old ALCO S2's are currently in such service, due to be replaced with the above NW2's plus 2 other EMD's.
At least a little good news, some components and sheet metal from both above NW2's have been (or will be)
donated to the Reading Co. Technical & Historical Society for use in their NW2 (RDG 103)."
January 2013
thanks Greg!

More notes.

the 2 Reading & Northern SD45-2's have been scrapped.

DL&W GP7 970 still sort of exists as a slug.
(DL&W 970) (EL 1409) (CR 5929) (ATSF 1108:2) (ATSF 108:4) and currently BNSF 3957
personally I dont consider a slug to be a surviving locomotive, but thats just me! ;)
but here she is anyway, still worthy of being listed.

Oddly, there are FOUR E-units painted in Erie & DL&W colors that were not originally Erie or DL&W locomotives at all!
“Erie 834” URHS of NJ, painted as Erie 834, originally NYC, was never actually an Erie unit.
“Erie 835” URHS of NJ, painted as Erie 835, originally PRR,  was never actually an Erie unit.
"DL&W 807" CNYRHS, painted as DL&W 807, originally PRR. was never actually a DL&W unit.
"DL&W 808" CNYRHS, painted as DL&W 808, originally PRR. was never actually a DL&W unit.
(I wish museums wouldn’t do this..but at least they didn’t give them REAL former Erie or DL&W numbers..so that’s helpful..I guess. )

and..for some unknown reason, there was once a SD24 painted in DL&W colors!
Steamtown did it. (they should know better than that! ;)
the real Lackawanna never owned a SD24.
the unit is now in a museum in Green Bay.
here is a photo of the unit in Lackawanna colors!

Update, December 2012.

Another EL loco has been lost, one of the big SD45-2's.
EL 3680 was scrapped at Larry's Truck & Electric in McDonald, OH, in December 2011.
EL 3680 went to Conrail 6665 in 1976, then to CSX 8976 in the 1999 split.
CSX retired the locomotive in 2005, and in November 2005 it became Ohio Central 8976.
The unit sat stored on the OC for several years, until the Genesee & Wyoming bought the OC in 2008.
3680 didnt "make the cut" (it might not have been operable) and the unit was sold to Larrys Truck & Electric,
where it was scrapped in December 2011.

Added info about EL 423, see *note 11 above.
January 2013, sadly EL 2563, the last remaining EL GP35 to not be radically modified from it's original configuration,
is now OOS. (It was operating with WATCO as of 2011)
Recent photos show it OOS, it's fate is uncertain:
