January 3, 1984 roster, breakdown by model, 121 total units:

The D&H had always been a loyal customer of Alco, and all through the diesel era it operated with a roster comprised of mostly Alcos, even up to the end in 1984:

Alco RS3            6 units. Original D&H
Alco RS3m         8 units. Original D&H, rebuilt in 1975/76.

Six unrebuilt RS3's, plus eight rebuilt RS3m's, for a total of fourteen RS3's still on the roster in 1984..
out of a total of 84 RS3's on the all-time D&H roster! The RS3's were the largest diesel single-model population on the D&H. In 2015, twelve D&H RS3's still survive.

Alco RS11         12 units. Original D&H
Alco RS36         12 units. Original D&H
Alco C420         13 units. One from L&HR, twelve from the LV.
Alco C424          9 units. Some RDG, some EL, all Conrail before D&H.

GE U33C            9 units.  Original D&H

EMD GP38-2    12 units. from the LV.
EMD GP39-2    40 units. Twenty from RDG, and twenty new for the D&H.

Diesel Locomotive models that existed before 1984, but were all off the roster by 1984:
Alco S2
Alco S4
Alco RS2
Alco C628
Alco PA
Baldwin RF16 Shark
GE U30C
EMD SD45
U23B - the 15 U23B's were sold to MEC in June 1983 for operating funds.

Three U33C's were off the roster by '84, nine were on the roster in '84, then seven more arrived during the
Guilford years. D&H rostered a total of Nineteen U33C's, some before, and some after Guilford.

Edfld Bill says: "At the Guilford takeover, 01/04/1984, the D&H no longer owned the U23B's, as they were transferred/sold to MEC in June of 1983 for operating funds. Also, on the takeover date, D&H still showed RS-3's 4075, 4085, 4099, 4103, 4118, and 4126 on the roster." (thanks Bill!)

RS3 4075:2
Thanks to Ralph V. Balfoort for the following information about D&H RS3's 4075 and 4082.
D&H rostered two different RS3's with number 4075, and two with number 4082!

"D&H 4075 and 4082 were traded to the B&M for their 1508 and 1536; the D&H needed two boiler-equipped units for Amtrak's return of Montreal service that used D&H equipment. For a time, the units were painted for the D&H, but carried their B&M numbers; they were later renumbered to replace the original D&H units. The ex-B&M units are easy to spot: 1508/4075 has frog eye number boards, and 1536/4082 has larger than standard hoodside number boards. Your website photo of 4075 is one of the ex-B&M units. "

Thank you Ralph!

shows the 4075:2 in Colonie on 8/20/1984. so she was likely on the D&H roster on Jan 1 1984

RS3 4099
in the Colonie dead line on 6/8/1984:

RS3 4085
Bridge Line HS says 4085 was retired or sold in 1980.
photos show the 4085 belonging to the ONER from 1981 to 1983.
Then she did briefly return to the D&H. D&H must have bought back the 4085.
Edfld Bill has Guilford data that says on 01/04/1984, the 4085 was in service and the 4126 was listed as "not available"..

RS3 4126
Bridge Line HS says the 4126 was sold or retired in 1982.
However this is likely incorrect, or perhaps she was returned to service (out of retirement) after 1982, because other records show the 4126 was sold to the Albany Port Railroad (D&H was a 50% owner) in the 2nd quarter of 1982. The reason it shows as "not available" is because being a APRR unit, it was not available for GTI service but was still maintained at Colonie. (info from Edfld Bill)
