First rolling stock.
scratchbuilt boxcar.

Gotta have a train for that locomotive to pull right?
I started work on a scratchbuilt boxcar in late 2004.
my first ever totally scratchbuilt rolling stock!
its been quite a learning process..did a LOT of things wrong!
but it turning out pretty well so far.

im working on it slowly, on Tuesday nights at the weekly operating
session of the GGGRS, at Irondequoit Mall in Rochester.
so it only gets worked on a few hours a month..
but im in no hurry.

I have a drawing for SR&RL boxcar #93, I blew it up to 1/29 scale, and am using it
to build the boxcar. here is the frame finished.

and here is the car alongside some 1/29 scale passenger cars.
the 2-foot boxcar and the standard gauge passenger cars are the same scale!
The boxcar is sitting on "standard gauge" track..it will eventually have 2-foot
track under it..

Update
April 12, 2005

Work has been slowly progressing on tuesday nights at the club.
pretty soon I will just take it home so I can work on it more! ;)
but its coming along..some pictures from April 12.

The Susie-Q boxcar and the 2-foot boxcar are the same scale!
again, the 2-foot car is sitting on standard gauge tracks.
it will end up being on 22mm gauge tracks.
which will be 2-foot gauge in 1/29 scale.

Update

Freight car trucks have been found!

I found an advertisement in a 13-year old magazine,
"The Train Yard" magazine, January/Febuary 1992 issue,
for 1/24 scale freight trucks made by a "Ryan Equipment Company"..
well apparently Ryan's company didnt last much beyond 1992,
because there is no trace of him today,
so I popped a note on mylargescale.com about these mysterious trucks,
and I got a lead for a guy in Canada who still had some for sale!
So I bought them!
they are an excellent size,
The prototype trucks have a 4' wheelbase, so I need 1.65" in 1/29 scale.
(or 42mm..sometimes converting to mm is easier.)
these Ryan trucks have a wheelbase of 45mm, only 3mm difference!
and the "style" of truck is a great match.
they will work very nicely!

Here is a photo of the trucks in their 1/24 scale 45mm gauge original form.
yes, they look very large, but thats because they havent been converted to 29n2 scale yet!
They will have much smaller wheels, and they will be regauged to 22mm.
its only the sideframes I care about.
I ordered wheelsets from NWSL again.
they are sold as 33" wheels in O-scale (.6875" actual diameter)
which scales out perfectly for the prototype 20" wheels in 1/29 scale. (which would be .6896")
you cant get any closer than that! ;)

Painting and decaling underway!

all that remains is the roofwalk, the trucks, the endbeams and couplers.
The next update will be of the finished car!

Update!
June 9, 2005
Boxcar is complete!

I think it turned out pretty good!
for my first ever totally scratchbuilt car..
here she is!

the freight trucks worked out well!
they are adapted from 1/24 scale, 45mm "Ryan Equipment company" trucks.
here is a photo of the original Ryan trucks in the background,
and the new 29n2 scale truck in the front.
O-scale North West Shortline wheelsets were used, regauged to 22mm,
and new center bolsers for the truck sideframes were scratchbuilt.
the brakes came with the Ryan trucks, (just not applied to the 45mm truck
in this photo)

I plan to try building a SR&RL caboose next, and eventually a coach.
probably the Rangely, or perhaps a W&Q coach.
