29n2 scale
page 4.
First 29n2 Locomotive!
Ok then..time to make some actual 29n2
models!
Freight cars, passenger cars, and cabooses will
all be pretty much scratch-built.
there is really no already-existing rolling
stock that has kitbash potential.
(at least, none that I have noticed yet.)
"G scale" rolling stock is the best bet, because
it already closest in size to 1/29 scale.
but nearly everything is just too big.
How about locomotives?
I do plan to scratch-build a model of WW&F
#9.
already have the wheels!
but what locomotives are already out there in
g-scale-ish land?
is there anything with kitbash potential??
well..we want something really small..and
something that can be re-gauged.
the accucraft Porter has EXCELLENT wheels and
wheelbase for the Portland forneys!
just about perfect size!
I havent yet looked into its frame to see if it
can re-gauged from 45 to 22mm, but it has potential.
Many of the small LGB units might be
usefull..but they have hideously LARGE flanges.
but with new wheels, the mechanisms might be
usefull.
Already existing S-gauge locomotives might work,
and I have even looking into HO scale locomotives.
However, most HO scale drivetrains that have
drivers of the correct height, are models of BIG standard
gauge
engines, so the driver style is all wrong..like
this:
again, the mechanisms on engines like this have
much potential, and its much easier to re-gauge WIDER than
it is to regauge narrower!
just need new axels! and the frame can stay
unmodified.
Getting back to the G-gauge realm..hmmm..that
new Bachman "mining mogul" is very small..
The "Indie" (its nickname) is a new, (and quite
inexpensive!) loco..
hmmm..nice small boiler, small cab..interesting!
Drivers are far too large, but that can be
fixed.
I have drawings for B&H Baldwin forney #7.
(this loco still exists in Maine!)
it is inside-frame, but its among the larger of
the maine forneys.
So I drew up a photoshop plan comparing the
Indie with B&H #7,
The drawing of B&H #7 is the correct size
for 1/29 scale, and the photo of Indie
is scaled to its actual size..in other words,
the drawing of #7 is "life size" for 1/29 scale,
and the Indie photo is "life size" to the real
model! hope that makes sense..
hmmmmm!!! very interesting!
the boiler, domes, stack and cab all look very
close to the correct size!
(im purposly making these drawings a little
small and unclear, so that the drawing of B&H#7 is not
in "usable" form..
so that im not publishing nice crisp clear
drawings on the internet!..they are fine for seeing what
needs to be seen though!)
So..lets do some photoshop kitbashing and see what happens if we move some Indie pieces around..
Looks good!! the only big problem is the drivers
are much too large..
but..what if I used those Slaters drivers?
Well this might have some potential!
for only $90, I might be willing to buy an Indie
and cut it up!
the only big question is if the drivers can be
regauged inward far enough.
I have seen photos of disassembled Indies on mylargescale.com,
and it looks close..
im willing to risk it!
(I also added a smaller headlight, smaller pilot
truck an smaller trailing truck to that last drawing.)
So..I went and got an Indie!!
to page 5, construction begins.
